Mugamoodi is an Indian Tamil superhero film written and directed by Mysskin that features Jiiva, Pooja Hegde and Narain in lead roles. It is the first Tamil super-hero movie, dedicated to Bruce Lee. Produced by Ronnie Screwvala and Sidharth Roy Kapur of UTV Motion Pictures, it was also dubbed in Telugu and released as Mask.
The film is about Anandan alias Lee (Jiiva) who cannot tolerate injustice and corruption and hence turns into a vigilante to fight against it for a better society. Lee falls in love with Shakthi (Pooja) and gets wrongly accused of killing her father (Nasser), also an Assistant Commissioner who is set in a mission to get hold of bandits responsible for thefts and murders across the city. To clear his name and revenge the goon (Narain) for murdering his best friend, Lee dons a Mugamoodi (mask).
Jiiva underwent special training in martials arts with experts from the Shaolin Temple in China and trained along with other artists for over 6 months at Mansuria Kung Fu in Chennai, handled by the Master R. Shekhar. High-end gadgets used in the film were reportedly designed by the Indian Institute of Technology (IIT), while teams from the National Institute of Fashion Technology (NIFT) were roped in to create the costumes and looks of the characters. Jiiva’s superhero outfit, designed by Gabriella Wilkins, weighed more than 10 kg. Mugamoodi’s score and soundtrack were composed by K that were well received among the audience. The movie received mixed reviews, but were highly enjoyed by Kids and younger audience. Critics cited Jiiva’s performance as the best, appreciated for slipping into the role with such ease and charm.
