Raam is a 2005 Indian Tamil language crime thriller drama film written, produced and directed by Ameer. The film stars Jiiva, Gajala and Saranya Ponvannan in lead roles with Kunal Shah, Rahman, Ganja Karuppu and Murali playing supporting roles. The film’s score and soundtrack are composed by Yuvan Shankar Raja.
The film was released in March 2005 and went on to become sleeper hit. It was screened at the Cyprus International Film Festival, where it won two awards for Best Actor and Best Musical Score for Jiiva and Yuvan Shankar Raja.
The story revolves around the relationship of a mother and her son, set in Kodaikanal. The movie begins with Rama Krishna, played by Jiiva, getting arrested by police on charges of murdering his mother Saradha (Saranya), a school teacher. The story rewinds to flashback, where it shows Rama Krishna as a mentally affected child who lacks maturity considering his age, and living with his mother Saradha. An angry Ram is also easily cut up the wrongs going around him. Whether Raam really killed his mother and how the plot develops into unexpected twists and surprise element forms the rest of the movie.
Jiiva was praised highly for this role by audience and critics. From his looks to body language, Jiiva slips into the character of Raam at ease and expresses it lucidly.
